Seaplane Base Coming to Tavares Soon!
For many decades seaplanes have been landing, taking off and water taxiing on Lake Dora in what has been a largely self-regulating air transportation system. While this system has worked relatively well, no regulations, flight patterns or designated approaches were ever established and there have been times when citizens who live along the shore line have complained about seaplanes flying too close to their homes, boaters have been confused as to where the planes will land and seaplane pilots have had no area to refuel. In order to mitigate these concerns, the City of Tavares is designating a landing zone away from the homes, designating a fight pattern and approach path away from homes and is in the process of placing this landing zone on all nautical and aeronautical charts for both boaters and pilots use so that safety is enhanced. Further, the city is establishing a "Green Marina" on the shores of its down town where both boaters and seaplanes can re-fuel safely.
This project will be complete with in the next two years and is expected to eliminate the low over flights over homes and improve safety. This project will also contribute to the multi-modal program for down town Tavares which encourages the use of planes, trains, water taxis, buses, golf carts, walking and biking trails and will stimulate the Down Town business revitalization efforts. Attached is a map showing the landing zone and flight pattern being established in the middle of the lake away from homes.
